UEFA EURO 2020: Romania and Ukraine Draw Blank in Group E Opener

Intense Match Filled with Missed Opportunities

In a highly anticipated clash, Romania and Ukraine played out a goalless draw in their Group E opener at the Allianz Arena on Thursday. Both teams displayed determination and created chances throughout the match, but neither side could find the elusive breakthrough.

Romania's Promising Start

Romania started the game with impressive energy, pressing high and creating early chances. Edward Iordanescu's men came close to scoring on several occasions, with Ianis Hagi and Ciprian Deac coming closest. However, the Ukrainian defense held firm, denying Romania a clear path to goal.

Ukraine's Dominance in Second Half

Ukraine gradually gained control of the match in the second half, controlling possession and creating their own opportunities. Andriy Yarmolenko and Roman Yaremchuk both threatened to break the deadlock, but the Romanian defense stood tall to keep the scores level.

Mixed Fortunes in Past Encounters

The draw continues a recent trend of tight encounters between these two sides. Romania emerged victorious in the first three meetings between 2001 and 2003, while Ukraine remained unbeaten in the last three matches from 2010 to 2016. The overall record now stands at W3 D2 L1 in favor of Romania.

Optas Simulation Predicts Ukraine Win

Despite the draw, data analytics company Optas has projected Ukraine as the more likely winner of the match. Their supercomputer simulations gave Ukraine a 42.6% chance of victory, compared to Romania's 30.2%.

Up Next

Romania will face reigning world champions France in their next Group E match on June 16, while Ukraine takes on Austria on the same day. Both teams will be hoping to secure vital points in their quest to advance to the knockout stages.
