Xcel Energy Warning of Possible Power Outages

What You Need to Know

Xcel Energy has issued a warning that possible power outages may occur in the coming days due to a combination of high temperatures and increased demand for electricity. The outages could affect customers in Colorado, New Mexico, and Texas.

The utility company is urging customers to conserve energy whenever possible, particularly during peak hours from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. Xcel Energy is also asking customers to turn off unnecessary lights and appliances, and to set their thermostats to a higher temperature.

What to Do if You Experience an Outage

If you experience a power outage, Xcel Energy advises you to take the following steps:

  • Check to see if your neighbors' power is also out.
  • If your neighbors' power is on, check your circuit breaker panel or fuse box.
  • If your circuit breaker or fuse has tripped, reset it.
  • If your circuit breaker or fuse has blown, replace it.
  • If you have checked all of the above and your power is still out, call Xcel Energy at 1-800-895-1999.

How to Stay Safe During an Outage

If you experience a power outage, it is important to take steps to stay safe.

  • Never use candles or other open flames for lighting.
  • Use flashlights or battery-powered lanterns instead.
  • Keep your refrigerator and freezer closed as much as possible.
  • If you have a generator, follow the manufacturer's instructions for safe operation.
  • Never connect a generator to your home's electrical system without a transfer switch installed by a qualified electrician.
